The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of a cheaper price is gone.

I saw this on the back window of a work truck.

Basically why the only GM car I’ve ever owned was my first car.

It’s the reversal of an old Rolls Royce slogan I think. “You still enjoy high quality when the price is long forgotten.” Something along those lines.

I’m keeping this adage in mind as I look at the bid from our contractor for a bathroom remodel. I know there are cheaper guys out there, but I also know he’ll do top drawer work, he’ll be here every day until the job is done, he’ll clean up every day when he’s done working, and he won’t rip me off. That peace of mind is worth it.

I hope.

Truth. A few years ago a friend wanted me to take him over to Harbor Freight for a battery tender. I resisted and asked what brand he was going to buy next year. On my insistence  we went to Costco and picked up a name-brand unit that he’s still using 5 years later, and it only set him back $4-5 more.

Fair.

However , things that my Jag has never done:

Have the exterior door pull break twice.

Had coil packs go bad so often that they counted as a consumable.

Had the window regulator die three   times.

Leaked coolant into the heater core.

Had each window button break twice.

Had multiple HVAC buttons break off.

Had the rest wear into a gross sheen.

Jags break because they’re engineered by British people, Chevys break because GM is the corporate version of a 15 year old who discover nihilism.

W hen I worked for my dad I loved it when we’d get calls from jobs we’d bid on months before where the customer wanted us to come and redo the poor quality work of the lowest bidder.

Clearly written by somebody that never used a 20% off coupon @ Harbor Freight.

There is freedom in completely not giving the slightest shit about inanimate objects.

You can buy a dozen 10mm sockets from HF for the cost of one from Snap-On.

If i’m buying something from harbor freight I just assume its a disposible tool.  I have a coworker who will go on how its awesome because its so cheap, and if it breaks he’ll just buy another one. To which I’ll reply and how much is your time when you have to quit a project half through to run to the store or delay until the next day?

Precisely ( although I have to say that the clamps I purchased there recently were much better than expected, and probably even better than the ones I bought at HD years ago) .

My friend is on disability and doesn’t have a whole lot of disposable income, and I’m trying to get him to see the point of waiting a little bit and buying something better rather than just buying the cheapest all the time. I think he gets it now.

It certainly sounds like something he would say, but I can’t find an authoritative source that credits him with it.
